Off The Grid?
A highly valued position for some is being off the grid . One’s privacy is much desired today. However, this not so much the case you want for your business. Being off the grid is not what you want. Rather, Found is what you want to be. Customers not finding you is bad for business.
It is so sad to see so many good, old timer business owners being left behind the times and just dropping off the grid because they simply don’t have an online presence. It’s even sadder when I see them close down after 50 years because of this. They reason, “We had a good run.” As this may be very true, it doesn’t have to end there. The old timers is the reason for this to which I dedicate this post.
The Yellow Page Story
Back in the day, actually since 1886, the yellow pages were THE way for people to find your business.
Here’s a funny story that you may not have known about the yellow pages. According to the story on wikipedia a printer in Cheyenne, Wyoming had a job to do a telephone directory. He ran out of white paper and ended up having to use the only paper he had, yellow paper. Thus the yellow pages were born.
A Dead Directory?
Sadly, the yellow pages as a source of business direction is dead or nearly extinct way for people to find you. If you’re still using the yellow pages to advertise your business than I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news. But the yellow pages are no longer the main source for people to find you. And if people can’t find you then guess what? Loss of business.
Good News
The good news is that although the yellow pages are dead, there is something even greater than the yellow pages. Online search engines like Google, Yelp, Yahoo, and Bing are super mega directories that can find just about anything and everything you can imagine. If you’re looking for vintage leather wallets from the 60’s, all you have to do is type that into google and it will do a world wide search for it and “wallah!” you’ve found it. If you’re looking for a 1970 Charger TA then you can find it.
So What Does This Have To Do With Me Having A Website?
It’s simple. You won’t be found if you don’t have a website. If you have a website and people search for you or your type of business you will be found.
Getting Found
The key is, you have to have a website to be found first when someone searches for you. Can’t I just get one of those free websites? No. The reason why is because you need a domain name to have exclusive direction to your website.
What’s a Domain Name?
A domain name is like a phone number for people to find you. A domain name is the name of your webaddress like: mybusiness.com. Or in the case of our website, nextlevelwebdevelopers.com. Free domains uses someone else’s domain which just gives them the credit. For example, the free site may come from freewebsite.com. So they would give you yourwebsite.freewebsite.com. “yourwebsite” is linked to freewebite.com.
Search Engine Optimization
Search engines use words contained in your website code that help people find you. Google’s gotten stricter on the criteria of getting your website to the top where people can find you. Now it’s all about content relevance based on what the person searching is looking for. So in a nut shell, if you don’t have the correct information on in your site or have it formatted in the way Google wants you to have it then you will not be found.
