Just Give Me A Plain Hamburger Please
Don’t you hate it when you go to a restaurant to eat and you end up leaving with something you never intended on getting in the first place? I get the waiter or sales clerk trying to do their job but there’s just sometimes you just want the basic plain meat and bun burger.
Getting Carried Away
I’ll admit it. I’m not a plain meat and bun burger kind of guy. I love the “all the fixings” and more in my burgers. As a web developer, it’s easy to get carried away with all of the fixings. We love all of the cool effects and things you can do on a webpage. You can do modals for an optin that captures your visitor’s info to automating your customer’s shopping and purchases to where your website makes money on it’s own while you’re sleeping. We won’t get into that in this post. I want to cover the basics of a simple informational website.
What’s in a basic website?
As mentioned before, it’s so easy to get caught up in building a complex website that it’s easy to forget the basic plain informational websites. So I wanted to share here what a simple basic website looks like.
When we design our websites, we build from the users prospective. For example, imagine that I as looking to buy dark chocolate covered almonds from a confectionary website that I’m building. How many steps would it take me to find that product? How well is the site categorized? Can I find it and make the purchase in less than 3-4 steps? The harder and longer it is to make the purchase the higher the likelihood you may lose a potential buyer.
We have a lot of our clients like physicians or those in specialty fields that just want their clients to be able to find them online. Or they want them to make an appointment or find the contact information to call to make an appointment.
Your page purpose
In the case of the basic website, the purpose or goal would be that people find you on Google. You would also want them to learn about what you do. And most importantly you want them to be able to contact you
So here is our list of what a 3-4 page basic website would like :
- Home Page – This is where you would have an introduction to what you do or offer. You would also want to have elements that would show how to link to what you offer on your other page(s) like services page or resources page, etc… You’ll also want to have a way to contact you or schedule an appointment on the middle or end of this page. There is no hard rule on contacting you because you want people to have as many opportunities to contact you from your website.
- About Page – On your about page you would have information about how you are, how you got to where you are, your credentials, experience, etc… and your contact information so they can reach you.
- Services Page – Here you would show all of the services that you offer and possibly links to individual descriptions of each service.
- Blog or Resources Page – Here you can use this to write different news or informational pieces to connect to your visitors. You can also have a resources page that has links or articles that pertain to what you do and the services you provide.
This is just a short list an example of what a simple plain website would look.
